Advantages of LiDAR technology safety, measure distances and create 3D models
- News
LiDAR stands for “Light Detection and Ranging” and is a new laser technology that can be used to measure distances and create 3D models of objects and environments. It is based on the use of laser light and is very flexible.
How does LiDAR work?
The LiDAR emits a laser beam in rapid succession. This is both harmless and invisible to the human eye. The emitted laser beam hits a variety of surfaces and is reflected by them. The LiDAR captures the reflected laser pulses and measures the time it takes for the laser to return to the source. Based on the measured time, the distance between the LiDAR system and the reflecting object can be calculated. By continuously emitting and receiving laser pulses, many measuring points in the environment are recorded. From these individual measuring points, the LiDAR creates a so-called “point cloud”, a 3D model of the environment. The 3D model of the monitored area shows information about the shape, size and position of objects.
